Shortness of Breath

Shortness of Breath

Dyspnea or shortness of breath is considered one of the most common symptoms. It refers to unexpectedly feeling out of breath, or winded.

Usually happens because of heart disease, lung disease, or in many cases as a result of deconditioning (sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise). Identifying the cause of shortness of breath is a collaborative effort between multiple physicians including your pulmonologist.

Common pulmonary causes of shortness of breath:

  • Asthma
  • COPD
  • Bronchitis
  • Pneumonia
  • Interstitial lung disease
  • COVID-19 infection or post COVID-19 residual shortness of breath
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Pulmonary embolism

Common cardiac causes include:

  • Congestive heart failure
  • Valvular heart disease
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Cardiac Arrythmia

At TruDoc Medical, we run extensive evaluations of the lung function, anatomy, and the patient’s body as a whole unit to identify the cause of shortness of breath. We follow a comprehensive approach to cover any possible reason for the shortness of breath. We treat and monitor results. We observe progression of symptoms overtime. If you are short of breath, do not wait. There is a reason and we will help you to find out what it is.

Are you still short of breath or having a cough after COVID-19 infection?

Coronavirus attacks the lungs and respiratory system and leads to pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and in some cases severe lung injury. Many patients who recovered from COVID-19 have residual cough, shortness of breath, and wheezing. Many patients are still using oxygen at home. At TruDoc Medical we try our best to help lessen your symptoms. We test your lungs and make sure that no other diseases are affecting your ability to breathe. We monitor your oxygen level, advise you to follow certain exercises, and assist you in weaning off oxygen as tolerated.
