Wheezing

Airways: normal vs inflamed

A wheeze is a continuous musical sound that can be produced by vibration of opposing walls of an airway that is narrowed almost to the point of closure. The most common cause of wheezing is asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Wheezing can also happen during episodes of acute bronchitis whether viral or bacterial.

To diagnose the cause of wheezing, the pulmonologist will run Pulmonary Function Testing (PFTs). Which is a non-painful test, done in the physician's office and provide detailed information about most aspect of the function of the lung.

Treatment differs depending on the cause of the wheezing and usually include a bronchodilator (inhaler).
